Linking Uncommon Curricula Through the Common Book
    Presenter(s): Joan Monahan Watson   |

Thu, Sep 10, 2009 : 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM : Smithfield Room, The Inn @ VT : Register
Description: The Common Book Project at Virginia Tech was established in 1998 as a means of enriching the first-year experience and creating a sense of community for undergraduate students. Each academic year since the first full-scale distribution in 2000, all incoming students have been given a book to engage them through the lens of shared reading and to provoke conversation among students and their professors. This Interactive Colloquium will address ways that we might take full advantage of the use of a common book on our campus as a means of engaging our students in acts of critical thinking and interdisciplinary synthesis. Participants will be encouraged to make connections between their own disciplinary curriculum and the current common book. (It is NOT necessary for participants to have read the common book prior to this session.)
