Description: This Interactive Colloquium provides a venue for a scholarly discussion of issues, perspectives, and best practices in service-learning. We will explore the roots of service-learning by looking at dimensions of civic engagement, which include values, knowledge, skills, efficacy, commitment, and empathy. We will discuss and ask you to reflect on the role and value of each dimension as well as connect you with resources for developing innovative and creative civic engagement strategies and programs. The goals for this session are four-fold: (1) To understand service-learning’s roots in civic engagement theory, (2) To gain an understanding of dimensions of civic engagement, (3) To understand some issues with and best practices of service-learning, and (4) To develop strategies and activities for introducing civic engagement in your classrooms.
