Description: The Edward S. Diggs Teaching Scholar Awards were established in 1992 to recognize outstanding teaching and exceptional contributions to the teaching program and learning environment. The Diggs Scholars are dedicated to promoting excellence, imagination, and commitment to teaching and student learning. This fall the three most recent “inductees” will host a roundtable on innovative strategies for the classroom. Tom Walker, Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering Education, will present “When Everyday is a Rip Van Winkle Day,” a talk that begins with a history of his personal involvement with educational technologies, followed with a brief history of educational technologies in general. He will close with some of his "dreams" for education in the future. Ellington Graves, Assistant Director of the Center for Africana Studies and Race and Social Policy Research, will talk about "Ideology, Subversion, and the Teaching Moment." Mitzi Vernon, Associate Professor in the School of Architecture + Design, will deliver a talk entitled “The Thinking Notebook”: A discussion that examines the empowerment of book-making for students as thinking tools. How can we extend the definition of the design sketchbook across disciplines as notebooks, fieldbooks, lab books, portfolios, business plans, and more? |
