Past Winners of the Teacher of the Week

Emily Wilkinson Stallings

The Center for Instructional Development and Educational Research (CIDER) recognizes Emily Wilkinson Stallings, advanced instructor of Communication, for her dedication to helping students become better communicators both inside and outside of the classroom.

Wilkinson Stallings teaches courses in organizational communication, interpersonal communication, and public speaking for the Department of Communication, as well as sections of the department’s first year experience course, Communication Skills. Wilkinson Stallings's instructional style reflects her passion for teaching and her genuine concern for the growth and discovery of her students. In her courses, students are introduced to a variety of communication theories and concepts, and are given opportunities to think critically about how communication relates to their lives both currently and in the future. Key to Wilkinson Stallings’s approach is the way in which she models effective communication skills both inside and outside the classroom and the thoughtful and insightful feedback she provides each student. She also presents students with meaningful hands-on learning opportunities and effectively incorporates a service learning component into many of her courses. Wilkinson Stallings equips students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences to be effective communicators in their profession, community, and personal lives.

Among her many university and professional service activities, Wilkinson Stallings is the chair and adviser for the Virginia Tech Undergraduate Honor System and will be a faculty leader for an upcoming study abroad trip to Switzerland. She has long demonstrated commitment to her own development as an instructor and to helping others develop as teachers. For example, she actively participates as both a participant and presenter in Center for Instructional Development and Educational Research (CIDER) faculty development workshops, and recently completed CIDER’s Instructional Scholars Teaching Certificate program.

Finally, it would be impossible to discuss Wilkinson Stallings’s teaching without highlighting her dedication to the students of Virginia Tech. In fact, her office is eclectically decorated with countless mementos from current and former students with whom she keeps in regular contact. For many, she is not only an instructor or colleague but also an invaluable mentor.

Through her years of dedication to helping Virginia Tech students become better communicators and community members, Emily Wilkinson Stallings makes a positive and meaningful impact in the Virginia Tech community.
