Past Winners of the Teacher of the Week

Gustavo Ferreira

The Center for Instructional Development and Educational Research (CIDER) recognizes Gustavo Ferreira, assistant professor of Agricultural and Applied Economics, for his dedication to providing students with a set of skills and tools needed for today’s competitive labor market, and for his commitment to that goal in both his teaching and advising.

In order to accomplish this goal, he has maintained rigor and delivered high quality teaching in all his courses. As part of his commitment to teaching excellence, Dr. Ferreira participated in five on-campus teaching improvement programs in the past three years. These programs focused on various pedagogic areas such as developing a course syllabus, teaching large classes, and the development of teaching assessment techniques. Dr. Ferreira’s efforts toward improving teaching effectiveness have been ratified by students’ evaluations and feedback (5.31/6.0 average score in the overall instructor’s teaching effectiveness) and by robust enrollment numbers (an average of 158 students per semester and a 100 percent enrollment increase in the last four years).

Dr. Ferreira has been a key component in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics (AAEC) agribusiness undergraduate program and has successfully taught various undergraduate level courses in agricultural economics, including: Foundations of Agribusiness (AAEC 2434), Small Business Management and Entrepreneurship (AAEC 3454), Marketing of Agricultural Products (AAEC 3454), and Agricultural Management and Problem Solving (AAEC 4404). Moreover, Dr. Ferreira was the advisor and co-advisor of the AAEC 4984 NAMA marketing competition from 2010 to 2013. These courses cover critical skills required by agribusinesses such as financial and business management, the understanding of agricultural markets, and the development of a professional business plan. His students are also trained and tested on their communication skills and the ability to work in groups. It is important to note that the Foundation of Agribusiness and Small Business Management and Entrepreneurship courses have a service mission within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the overall campus, and are often comprised of students with various academic backgrounds.

Dr. Ferreira’s inclusion efforts were recognized through the Excellence in Access and Inclusion Award granted by Services for Students with Disabilities in 2011. More recently, he was selected for the Favorite Faculty Award sponsored by Housing and Residence Life in the spring of 2012.

Dr. Ferreira’s passion for teaching has been ratified, notably in comments on his semester evaluations, “Dr. Ferreira is a great instructor and knows exactly how to communicate what aspects of business are most important for us to know and exactly how to convey the information in a comprehensive manner.” Another student fondly remarked of Dr. Ferreira’s efforts, “very engaging and provided chances for students to learn and grow with the subject matter. Best professor I have ever had.”
