Past Winners of the Teacher of the Week

Hsiao-Wei (Vicky) Tu

The Center for Instructional Development and Educational Research (CIDER) recognizes Hsiao-Wei (Vicky) Tu, instructor of Neuroscience, for her dedication to providing students thorough explanations of neuroscience material with respect to real world applications.

The past semester, Dr. Tu taught Cognitive Neuroscience, a senior seminar in neuroscience, and Introductory Neuroscience Lab sections. She’s taught a range of students that includes freshmen to seniors at the undergraduate level, holding all of them to an exceptionally high standard. While teaching, Dr. Tu focuses on having her students think critically about the course material with a focus on real world applications that will benefit students pursuing a career in neuroscience. One student said, “I felt that (Dr. Tu) pushed me to be a better student this semester and I learned a lot from her.” Students have also stated that it’s evident that Dr. Tu cares if they genuinely learn the course material. “She spent a lot of time making sure our in-class questions were answered.” If a student asks a question that she couldn't answer, Dr. Tu often returns the next class period with a short video providing an answer to the question.

Dr. Tu’s commitment to the learning and well-being of her student is evident in the following student testimonials: "(Dr. Tu) provides us real life, career-oriented neuroscience skills. After taking her class, I feel more confident applying to neuroscience graduate programs." and
"My ability to critically analyze and discuss neuroscientific research articles, which is a critical skill for a career in neuroscience, has greatly improved from (Dr. Tu)'s course."
