Past Winners of the Teacher of the Week

Troy Abel

The Center for Instructional Development and Educational Research (CIDER) recognizes Troy Abel, assistant professor of Visual Communication Design, for serving as the Chair of the VCD, runing an eye-tracking and usability lab, and overseeing a service center. Dr. Abel loves teaching. Dr. Abel is a hard, but well respected teacher and pushes his students to excel by asking them to take risks and embrace their role as designers in training. One of the most amazing aspects of Dr. Abel's teaching is his use of design methodologies to help student arrive and unique and creative design solutions.

Dr. Abel has taught Electronic Portfolio (a very difficult class), Package Design, Intermediate Graphic Design, and various Independent Study classes at Virginia Tech. His students have won numerous awards including American Advertising Federation (ADDY) awards for their work in his classes. Because the VCD program is a capped program our class sizes are limited to around 20 students, but Troy's work has effected students in the VCD program and the School of Visual Arts positively.

Dr. Abel comes to Virginia Tech from Iowa State University where he received the Teaching Excellence Award for his work.
