Past Winners of the Teacher of the Week

Dean Stauffer

The Center for Instructional Development and Educational Research (CIDER) recognizes Dean Stauffer, professor of Fish and Wildlife Conservation, for his focus on student-centered learning that respects students as individuals and seeks to help each of them learn to the best of their ability.

Dr. Stauffer’s approach to teaching all levels of students has evolved to recognize that "less is more," as he seeks to help students understand concepts and principles related to Wildlife Conservation, allowing them to fill in the details. He has helped teach the College of Natural Resources and the Environment First Year Experience from 2011 - 2015. In 2015, after seeing the need to assist transfer students with their transition to VT expectations, particularly for writing, he developed and taught an FYE course for transfer students in 2015 & 2016. This class is now on our check sheet and has been submitted for governance approval. Dr. Stauffer also teaches two upper-level classes in Habitat Ecology (FIW 4434) and Habitat Evaluation (4474) annually, and teaches graduate students in his class FIW 5254 Design and Analysis of Field Studies. Regardless of student level, Dr. Stauffer approaches teaching by focusing on respecting the inherent worth of each student, and seeks to establish a classroom where all views are respected and students are comfortable with expressing their opinions.

Dr. Stauffer received a Certificate of Teaching Excellence (1994) and has been selected as the outstanding professor in his department in 1993, 2003, 2010 & 2011. In 2016, he received the College's recognition as outstanding Advisor (also student-selected). Students have clear respect for him. As one remarked in their SPOT " Fantastic professor. Easy to see his enthusiasm for the subject matter and his willingness to help students." Transfer students in particular have remarked on his committed to ease their transition to Virginia Tech: "His personable, approachable manner helped alleviate some of the intimidation of adjusting to a new campus." And "The professor was outstanding in discussing items relevant to the student's discipline and really connecting with students and making the transition to Tech as smooth as possible." In addition to student recognition, Dr. Stauffer is also a nominee for a 2017 WINE award.
