Past Winners of the Teacher of the Week

Christopher Barnes

The Center for Instructional Development and Educational Research (CIDER) recognizes Christopher Barnes, assistant professor of Management, for engaging students with scientific literature relevant to the topic of diversity, and involvement in the diversity case competition.

Christopher Barnes teaches MGT 3324, Introduction to Organizational Behavior. He makes diversity a priority topic in his course. Going beyond textbook approaches, Christopher drew from cutting-edge scientific research on diversity to create an in-class exercise designed to diagnose and understand faultlines in teams. After communicating the research findings, Christopher had each group diagnose where their diversity-based faultlines would most likely reside, how this would influence their interpersonal interactions, and how this would change over time. This hands-on activity reinforced the lesson drawn from the scientific literature, providing students the ability to predict patterns of interaction in their teams and carry forth such tools into future teams.

Christopher Barnes has stellar ratings of teaching across 3 universities (Michigan State University, the United States Military Academy at West Point, and Virginia Tech). Very recently, Christopher was nominated for a Favorite Faculty award from Housing and Residence life.
